Middle East Policy Summer 2024 Issue

Middle East Policy’s Summer 2024 issue is now free for all readers, even those without a subscription. The 10 research articles and three book reviews, featuring the latest insights into the Gaza war and how the region’s conflicts are affecting international politics, are available without charge through July 31.

The journal, now in its fifth decade, provides credible, comprehensive analyses to policy makers, scholars, and the public, combating disinformation through high-quality scholarship.

The 160th issue of Middle East Policy examines how the Netanyahu government could learn from American blunders in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as how Israel controls and distributes water resources vital to the occupied territories and Jordan. An original survey by Palestinian scholars indicates that young people in the West Bank and Gaza believe the divisive discourses employed by Hamas and Fatah have undermined national unity.

From there, the journal zooms out to analyze the broader implications of Middle Eastern politics, including how Israel has cultivated its friendship with Russia; how the wars in Gaza and Karabakh are creating potentially a deadly rivalry between Iran, Russia, and Armenia on one side and Turkey, Israel, and Azerbaijan on the other; and how states in the region are taking positions on the Ukraine war as they seek to balance between the United States and Russia. The issue also provides in-depth looks at Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent electoral losses and the shifting fortunes of Islamism in Egypt.
